OpenAI API Alchemy: Emoji storytelling πŸ€–

OpenAI’s API is incredibly versatile at comprehending text and completing passages, finding data and generating new information. For fun I wanted to see what would happen if I supplied it with a different kind of text data: Emojis.

Emojis are interesting because they can convey information visually and are understood around the world regardless of someone’s native language. They’re also closest to our earliest form of written communication, pictographs.

I’d already seen the API respond with emojis in chat conversations and it understood smiley faces and other expressions, but what about using them in a slightly more complex manner?

I decided to give it some movies described in emojis and see what happened. First I provided this context:

Back to Future: πŸ‘¨πŸ‘΄πŸš—πŸ•’
Batman: πŸ€΅πŸ¦‡
Transformers: πŸš—πŸ€–

When I asked it to do the same for Star Wars, this was the response:

Star Wars: πŸš€πŸ°πŸš€

I think that’s a pretty good response! Here are some of the others it created:

Zootopia: πŸ¦ŠπŸΎπŸ»πŸ¦‹πŸ°
Wonder Woman: πŸ‘ΈπŸ»πŸ‘ΈπŸΌπŸ‘ΈπŸ½πŸ‘ΈπŸΎπŸ‘ΈπŸΏ
The Godfather: πŸ‘¨πŸ‘©πŸ‘§πŸ•΅πŸ»πŸ‘²πŸ’₯
Star Trek: πŸ––πŸš€
Planet of the Apes: 🐡🦍
Game of Thrones: πŸ‘‘πŸΊπŸ°
Jurassic Park: πŸ‘¦πŸ¦–πŸ¦•πŸ¦–
Castlevania: πŸ‘»πŸ‘ΉπŸ•·πŸ”ͺπŸ’‰πŸ§›β€β™€
The Matrix: πŸ€–πŸ€
Iron Man: πŸ€–πŸ› οΈπŸšπŸŽ©πŸŒ²
Death Note: πŸ“–πŸ”ͺπŸ”«πŸ—‘
Frozen: πŸŒ¬πŸ‘§πŸ»πŸ‘§πŸ»πŸŒ²
The Hunger Games: 🏹πŸ₯ŠπŸŒ½πŸ†

While these aren’t the most complex replies, it shows the API clearly understands what emojis are and how they convey information. For a next step it would be interesting to see if the API could tell stories entirely through emojis.
